The 10 km bike route is an easy recreational ride on level ground on service roads, residential streets, bike paths, and low traffic streets. Busy streets are crossed at controlled crossings with assistance by volunteer Route Marshals to ensure safety. The route can be repeated for a 20 km ride.
Participants are guided along the routes by directional signage and volunteer Route Marshals. All route distances are approximate.
On event day, free parking is available for Ride for Refuge participants in the parking lots on both sides of the site location - at the Church, Dental Office, and the 3 NAIT buildings. We have a sturdy, low metal fence available for bicycle lock-up, if needed.
The halfway rest stop for the bicycle route will be at the site start/stop location.
The light meal consists of BBQ halal meat burgers and veggie burgers, with the option of gluten free or regular buns, along with lettuce and tomato slices. Homemade veggie samosas and traditional Oromo/Ethiopian cookies/sweets will also be provided.

FOCAS Canada (Foundation for Oromian Culture, Education & Arts Services) provides resettlement services for newcomers and refugees. Currently, the people we serve are primarily from north east Africa.
We are the builders of social bridges over which refugees, newcomers and immigrant communities cross to Canadian multiculturalism and economic prosperity. We influence children to develop trust in themselves, as well as the energy and drive to overcome their challenges and grow with confidence and the ability to impact their future. We closely work with parents to properly guide and monitor their kids for greater academic and social success. We motivate our children to shine in their classrooms and play leadership roles in their schools. We build bridges between their home cultures and the Canadian culture through empowerment and learning excellence, enabling them to become contributing members of society. We bridge the gap.
Ride for Refuge funds will help us to keep doing what we do well and bridge the gap between other funding sources. We will be able to continue to offer our regular programs and start new ones. In particular, we will be able to resume our weekly seniors social and cultural program, reducing their isolation and loneliness.
