The Refuge Youth Outreach Centre demonstrates Jesus Christ's love and kindness to the youth of our community through practical and compassionate means of intervention and prevention in the Regional Municipality of Durham.
The Refuge has worked with almost 5,000 homeless and street-involved youth up to the age of 24 years since 1999. We serve approximately 11,000 meals to about 500 youth each year. They are young women and men, and sometimes their children, facing unbelievable circumstances, pain and poverty.
92% of the youth that come to The Refuge have been sexually or physically abused typically at the hands of a caregiver. 78% of the youth have been or presently are a ward of the crown. 72% were asked to leave their homes by their parents or caregiver. Each and every young person feels lost, lonely, terrified and unloved.
The Refuge seeks to provide a healing community where youth feel a sense of belonging, encouragement, healing and love regardless of regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, life situation, or creed.
Breaking the cycle of physical, emotional and spiritual poverty is crucial and The Refuge provides a family in which youth can heal so that they can move forward in a positive direction.
